22 TO BE: THERE IS, THERE ARE

Elementary exercise in the use of the indefinite "there is..."
Examples:
There are no shops open because there is a holiday.
There is no train service today because there is a strike.
Read through the following aloud, providing "there is/there are" as needed.
01. .................... no one watching TV because .................... no good programmes on.
02. .................... a cat in the kitchen because .................... mice in there.
03. .................... a lot of policemen about because .................... a political demonstration today.
04. .................... a queue at the department store because .................... a sale on.
05. .................... no complaints because .................... good service.
06. .................... no hot water because .................... a power shortage.
07. .................... no swimming today because .................... no water in the pool.
08. .................... a lot of work to do because .................... a new manager in the office.
The same sentences can now be read in the past tense: "There was... There were..."
