A Scottish Story
Answers. As this is an easy exercise, a pre-intermediate student should have most of it correct.
A young Scotsman (1) and an elderly Scotsman (2) were travelling in the same railway compartment (3) from Aberdeen to Glasgow.
The young man said: "Excuse me, but (4) can you tell me what the time is?"
The old man (5) did not reply.
The young man asked again.
Still no answer.
(6) At last, the young man asked: "Why don't you answer my question?"
The old man replied: "Let (7) me explain. After I tell you the time, we would fall (8) into conversation. We become friendly. We go to the bar (9) for a drink. I buy you a whisky. You buy me a whisky. Then I invite you (10) home, and you meet my daughter. You fall (11) in love with her. You ask her to marry you. I don't want my daughter to marry a man (12) who doesn't even have a watch."
