Answers
If you get less than 10 correct, you are not at intermediate standard. If you make only one or two mistakes, your level is probably upper intermediate.

Jane Wilkinson has a problem. She was employed at/by Preston Maternity Hospital, England, but she lost her job. Her trouble is her appetite. She was accused of eating 48 birth certificates, 19 marriage certificates as well as other important papers, the property of the hospital where she was employed.

She said that she had managed to control her habit while in training and studying to be a nurse. She had at that time stuck to packets of Kleenex in order to satisfy her hunger. However, she had recently got married and her terrible hunger had returned.

When she was in her teens she started off with blotting paper. By the time she left school she was chewing her way through half a dozen school text books each lunchtime. For/At tea, she would eat the sports pages of/from her father's evening paper.

Nurse Wilkinson said, "When I found my first job, I stuck to a diet of bus tickets and cigarette packets, but I lost my boy friend over/through it. Then it seemed a good idea to become a nurse. Everything went well until I got married."
