Answers. An upper intermediate student should have all of these correct. An intermediate student might be allowed two or three slips.

03. I have been attempting to learn to play the flute and I hope to play in public soon.

04. I have trouble understanding modern art as some artists only seem out to shock; I cannot understand them not wanting to make the kind of beautiful things we all like looking at.

05. You mustn't mind taking trouble over the cooking if you want your guests to enjoy their meal.

06. It is worth watching the news if you want to keep up to date.

07. I like watching the clouds at sunset because it seems relaxing and puts me in the right frame of mind to sleep.

08. I enjoy visiting the internet café on my way home to check my e-mails and maybe surf the net for a while.

09. Eating apples is better for you than drinking fizzy orange juice.

10. I meant to buy some croissants before leaving for work.

11. I detest hearing loud car radios even more than listening to politicians rant and rave.

12. He had given up smoking twenty or thirty times but was so weak-willed he couldn't prevent himself starting again as soon as he was offered the deadly weed.
