LESSONS IN LONDON: SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Speech
All tutorials are speech-based. Continuous attention is given to the improvement of pronunciation by speech and voice training exercises.
Listening and Conversation
Improved by the development of short-term processing memory.
Rapid response is encouraged, as well as the ability to pick up the unstressed structural words that form the patterns and rhythms of spoken English.
Composition
Perhaps the most difficult of EFL skills, especially for academic students. Everything is done to simplify the practice of style and development, organisation of material, and sentence and paragraph structures.
For conversation
Everyday topics of conversation systematically dealt with.
Speed of response and active participation is encouraged.
Conversation is linked to personal interests, social activities and current affairs.
For business
Social English is developed using business topics and current affairs.
Presentations, discussion, communicating a point of view, argument.
If requested, formal and informal letter-writing, speech-making, product descriptions and presentations.
For study
Organisation and writing of term papers: use of footnotes, developing the bibliography, defining the topic and presenting argument, use of evidence, order of paragraph development.
Presenting papers in tutorials and seminar discussions.

PREPARING FOR EXAMINATIONS
Cambridge
Special help given with Use of English papers, especially the summary in the CPE paper, and the alternative usages in the CAE and CPE.
Preparation for composition paper in CPE and formal and informal letter-writing for the FCE and CAE papers. Special preparation for the new FCE examination.
Examinations early June and mid-December (FCE also in March); registration, mid-March and mid-October.
TOEFL
Special attention to Section 1, Listening Comprehension and Section 3, Reading Comprehension. The test takes place about every three months, and has to be booked about five to six weeks in advance.
TOEIC
Improvement of listening and reading and comprehension, with business-related content. Frequent tests, available weekly.
IELTS
Specific help with all modules: reading comprehension, writing tasks, and listening.
Tests at monthly intervals, although between one test and the next, a student has to wait three months: this regulation applies also to the TOEFL.
